The LHC Machine Advisory Committee (MAC) at a recent meeting expressed concern that not enough has been done to ensure that detector protection and background shielding are adequate. In past and present machines it has always been difficult to keep backgrounds down to an acceptable level and a better understanding of the issues involved seems to require closer involvement with the experimenters. The Committee therefore recommended the formation of a joint working group of experimenters and machine specialists to focus on this important matter. The LHC Machine Induced Background Working Group is such a forum, set up by the TS-LEA Group as discussed in the February 2005 meeting of the LHC Experiment Machine Interface Committee (LEMIC). |
